About Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are those unsightly, gnarled blue and red veins that typically appear on the legs and feet. These veins develop when blood pools in the veins of the lower legs due to inability of the venous blood to return back to the heart. This abnormal process is due to impairment of the function of the multiple valves that exist in the leg veins. With these dysfunctional valves the return flow of the vein blood towards the heart is disturbed leading to what is termed “Venous Reflux”. This causes an abnormally high pressures in the vein system that eventually causes the veins to swell and protrude, leading to the appearance of varicose veins.
For many patients, varicose veins are little more than a cosmetic problem. However, severe varicose veins can cause other symptoms, including a feeling of heaviness, tiredness, itching, burning, numbness/tingling in the legs and swelling (edema), or aching/pain in the lower legs and feet. It may also cause restless legs and leg cramps. In some cases, varicose veins can lead to vein ulcerations, which are open sores that usually appear on the ankles and can be very difficult to treat. The removal of varicose veins will not only reduce these potentially uncomfortable and in some cases limb threatening symptoms, but also result in smoother, more attractive legs.
